Plug-in Prius Official for 2010!

toyota announced plug-in prius by 2010

On Detroit Motor Show, Toyota's president Katsuaki Watanabe publicly announced that company will release a plug-in version of its famous hybrid-electric vehicle - Prius. Plug-in Prius will be on mass market by 2010 or even up to a year earlier available for government agencies.

This announcement is a part of Toyota's aggressive environmental policy, which many see as an answer to rebuild peoples trust and image of green car manufacturer. This image was shredded to pieces in last year's fiasco when Toyota opposed the new US Bill which would limit average mileage to 34-MPG by year 2015. Many environmentalists are calling for plug-in hybrids (also named PHEVs), or other plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, as this is the only way to save on gasoline and to cut increasing emissions.

Plug-in Prius will be based on modified Prius as we know it today, but will build on stronger Li-Ion battery cells. New Li-Ion batteries will be capable to achieve fuel efficiency of 99.9 miles-per-gallon in EV mode, but the final capacity (reach) is still unknown. It should be way higher than today's 7 miles in Prius 2007 hardwired to EV mode. Today Prius uses Nickel-Metal Hydride batteries. Plug-in hybrids are different from the current hybrid vehicles in that they can be charged not by internal motor or wheels with breaking, but by external power source - i.e. a regular power outlet.

Informational Facts about Hybrid Cars Trucks and Hybrid Vehicles

Most of us heard about hybrid vehicles, but many of us can’t explain the definition. The definition of the word “hybrid” is something of mixed origin or composition. This definition fits hybrid vehicles of today perfectly. A hybrid car is a vehicle that uses both a gas engine and an electric motor. The gasoline engine is often smaller than a regular vehicles, allowing the electric motor to compensate with electric energy. A high voltage battery charges the electric motor. Older hybrid cars need to be ‘plugged in’ when not being used, new hybrids recharge themselves when not in use.

The interesting thing about a hybrid vehicles is they can often work with just one of the energy resources, the gasoline engine or the electric powered motor. Most drivers operate their hybrid using both resources even though they may not know it.

You wont notice what’s going on under the hood while you drive a hybrid. The car will mainly operate on the power from the gasoline engine. Yet when the electric motor is needed it takes over. The gas engine conserves energy by instantly shutting off when the vehicle stops. In example, when the vehicle comes to a stop light, the gasoline engine will turn off until the gas pedal is pushed again. The radio, lights, and all other components though, will stay consistent due to the battery. While not all hybrids work this way, many do.

There have been some problems with the design of a stopped engine. Since the gasoline engine cuts off and on, it is usually virtually silent. This can confuse drivers or emergency workers. They may think the car is off, when it’s actually on. There have been many improvements in this area, including the addition of an indicator lights near the speedometer of most models. This lights tell the drivers or a worker that the car is still on. Some manufacturers still suggest chocking the wheels of your hybrid when it is parked to avoid any accidents.

It is no secret that gas prices are soaring in the world today. Many drivers are complaining about the huge increase in prices. Since hybrids run on a gasoline engine as well as an electric motor, they do not require as much gasoline as regular vehicles. The average miles per gallon a hybrid car will obtain is 50. This makes them very popular with consumers. In turn, since hybrids burn less gasoline than most vehicles, they also emit fewer pollution. They have shown to be up to 90% cleaner than a conventional automobiles. The small and efficient engines also help reduce their total exhaust emission levels. They are extremely friendly to the environment.

Hybrids have several features making them much different than conventional cars. The construction of hybrids is one place they differ. Some of today’s hybrids are made of plastic and aluminum. The lightweight designs make the cars able to be powered easily. It may seem these vehicles would offer less protection than conventional cars, but studies have shown they are quite safe. The manufacturers can create stability by using panels in various shapes to reinforce the total design.

Two of the biggest manufacturers of hybrid cars are Honda Motors and Toyota Motor Corporation. They brought the hybrid to the U.S. around the turn of the century. They originally put out the Honda Insight and Toyota Prius to the country, with great success. Now, many other manufacturers are getting into large scale hybrid manufacturing. There are sport utility models as well as full size trucks. With consumers flocking to hybrids, there is no doubt, all manufacturers will be trying to design the best models.

The hybrid vehicle is something that has seen great acceptance around the world in the last few years. With concerns of global warming, it is welcoming to have eco-friendly options available for consumers. Employers and city governments are beginning to take note as to, offering employee incentives and free city parking. The fact is hybrid vehicles save the consumer money on gasoline and help keep the environment safe. Buying a new hybrid vehicle is a positive green situation for everyone involved.

The Basics of Solar Power

Unless you have a severe sun allergy that prohibits you from walking outside or being near a window during the day, you have felt the power of the sun. The warming rays ensure humanity’s very existence. Since the beginning humans have needed the sun to grow food, provide warmth and light the way.

It may just be another star in the sky but for Earth it is what gives us life. There is more to the sun than just allowing us to spend a day outside. It can be the solution to our energy problems. Solar power may be the future of the Earth in more ways than one and in this audio program we will discuss some of the most common questions and answers regarding solar power.

What is solar power?

Solar power is the photovoltaic and thermal rays from the sun that is used to create electricity. Solar rays travel from the sun, pass through Earth’s atmosphere and are collected in special cells which then store and produce electrical current for human use.

Is solar power and solar energy the same thing?

Actually even though people interchange both words, they are not the same thing. Solar energy is the “catch all” term that describes all the uses of solar rays. Solar power is the specific action of photovoltaic rays being captured and converted into electricity. Most people do not realize the difference and it is a very common misconception.

Why should we use solar power?

There are many reasons to use solar power. The first is the growing problem of fossil fuels. Scientists and environmentalists know that eventually fossil fuels will run out. When this happens, humanity must have another method of fuel.

There is also the problem with the emissions that come about as a direct result of burning fossil fuels. The sun provides constant power and it is in everyone’s best interest to utilize this natural resource. The sun is free and unlikely to go anywhere in the next three thousand years.

What happens if it is a cloudy day?

Unless you have storage for your collected solar power, you will have to rely on other means to heat, cool or power your home. If the solar panels do not receive sunlight, the process of converting the thermal rays into electricity does not happen. If you do have storage, the power will be pulled from there.

What is the Kyoto Protocol?

The Kyoto Protocol is an agreement between nations that is aimed at reducing the consumption of fossil fuels and reducing the amount of greenhouse gases. Current theories state that the “Greenhouse Effect” is a dire predicament Earth is facing as rising temperatures occur all over the Earth. This rise in temperature will allegedly cause climactic changes and the extinction of many species.
